The following are screen shots of the same page with different doctypes viewed in different browsers:
HTML 4.01 Strict Standards Mode and both XHTML 1.0 validate to their assigned doctypes. The only difference between the two XHTML pages are the presense or absence of the XML prolog.
In all cases the CSS fully validates.
